Is there a genre these brothers can’t handle? No there is not.
The first names that come to mind to produce a hip-hop dance series are not Mark and Jay Duplass. Nonetheless, the ubiquitous siblings will produce one and simultaneously expand their dominance on the Disney Channel. Actors, directors, producers and writers commonly known as the Duplass Brothers will produce the abridged Disney Channel YouTube series “Shook”, it was announced Wednesday. The modern hip-hop dance series will be available on Saturday, September 28.
“Shook” stars Sofia Wylie – most recently “Andi Mack” and star of upcoming “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series” for Disney + – as 15-year-old Mia, who wants to start dancing professionally. But her first duty is to her family – her younger sister Skylar and her busy single mother who is a registered nurse – which doesn’t leave her much time to pursue her dream. Thanks to outgoing best friend Fredgy and mentor Ritz, Mia begins to explore the liberating world of street dancing and learn to express herself.
“It’s not every day that Disney asks you to partner up with a diverse, fun and avant-garde dance series. In fact, it might never happen again, so we enjoy it while it lasts, ”said Mark Duplass, co-founder of DBP Donut.
“Disney Channel’s YouTube channel already has 3 million subscribers and 1.4 billion views. Adding ‘Shook’ as a foray into the original scripted content is a great step in continuing to connect with our viewers on a platform they already use, ”said Vincent Aricco, Vice President of Content Development multiplatform, Disney Channels Worldwide. “Sofia’s extraordinary talents and already huge fan base allow us to reach and interact with our primary audience of children and adolescents through visual storytelling for an increasingly digital audience. “
The Duplass brothers have been producing movies and TV shows for over 20 years with the most recent projects at HBO (“Room 104”, “Togetherness”, “Animals.”) And Netflix (“Wild Wild Country”, “Evil Genius “). Although they have backgrounds in comedy, drama, anthology, animation and documentary, “Shook” will be a new foray into youth programming.
Hannah Peterson (“East of the River”) directs the single-camera narrative from a script by Jonathan Hurwitz (“Andi Mack”). Alexis Beauregard (“Love & Hip Hop Hollywood”) will choreograph. The series has already started filming in and around Los Angeles.
The cast also includes Somali Rose (“Raven’s Home”), LeShay Tomlinson (“Insecure”), Sydney Sepulveda (“Hard Knocks”), Wayne Mackins (“The Prom”), Jenna Z. Alvarez (“Kidding”) and Caroline Harris (“Megalodon”).
“Shook” will be available Saturday, September 28 on Disney Channel’s YouTube.
