Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” isn’t just one of the all-time great horror novels, its title character has been seen on the big and small screen countless times. It seems audiences just can’t get enough of the deadly yet suave bloodsucker, which speaks to the beauty of Drac’s character. One of the most interesting sequences from the original novel that has rarely received much attention in film adaptations involves the crew of the ship the Demeter, tasked with delivering crates of dirt from Dracula’s castle in the Carpathian Mountains to his new home in London. Along the journey, the crew experiences bizarre incidents, such as missing crew members, reports of a strange man, and more.
It’s actually a pretty terrifying sequence in the novel, and it will finally get its due in an upcoming movie, “Last Voyage of the Demeter.” While the Demeter portion of the plot only included a chapter from “Dracula,” it will be fascinating to see a feature length dedicated to the history of the crew and their interaction with everyone’s favorite vampire. The film will be directed by André Øvredal, whose previous forays into horror include 2019’s “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark” and 2016’s “The Autopsy of Jane Doe”. Actors include Corey Hawkins, Nikolai Nikolaeff, Liam Cunningham , David Dastmalchian and others. “Last Voyage of the Demeter” is set to be released on August 11, 2023.
